SEAWARD BECOMES GOLD CORPORATE SPONSOR FOR LOCAL HOSPITAL CANCER APPEAL
(11/07/06)
Local developer, Seaward Properties, has become the most recent Gold Corporate Sponsor for St. Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.
Seaward Properties is known for its residential and commercial developments across the South Coast, Hampshire and West Sussex region. Barry Sampson, Chairman of Seaward Properties comments:
“Seaward is delighted to have become involved in St. Richard’s Hospital £3 million Cancer Day Unit Appeal. By becoming a Corporate Partner, Seaward will help St. Richard’s Hospital to care for patients affected by cancer.”
The hospital anticipates that with their new appeal they will be able to treat 66 percent more patients, making a huge difference to the local community.
Barry continues: “As a local business we endeavour to become involved in the community and are keen to commit support to a worthy Appeal. We hope that the Cancer Day Unit Appeal at St. Richards’ Hospital will actively improve people’s lives.”
Representatives of the first companies to become partners were presented with a certificate at the launch party, which took place on 30th June, giving sponsors a chance to see how their donations will help the charity and demonstrate their commitment to their own employees and the community.
Head of Fundraising, Veryan Grant believes that everyone can contribute in some way: "We are very pleased that a business such as Seaward is keen to show its support by donating £5,000. This will make a real difference and help us achieve our ultimate goal of raising £3 million for the Cancer Day Unit. Through the corporate partnership scheme, we can proudly acknowledge the company's support.”
About St Richard’s Hospital
One in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives and few people escape coming into contact with the disease, either through personal experience or through that of a friend or relative. It is vital that St. Richard's Hospital is able to help in the very best way it can.
Patients with cancer such as lung, breast, bowel, prostate, ovarian, lymphoma and leukaemia are all treated at the hospital, but currently the facilities are simply inadequate.
Day care treatment takes place in part of a ward for inpatients with cancer. It is overcrowded and uncomfortable.
There is no focal area designated for patients, so they receive different elements of their care in different areas of the hospital. Having a long tiring walk around the site is the last thing patients need, when they are already battling with the physical and emotional stress of cancer.
The hospital's catchment area is some 450 square miles from Emsworth in the West to Littlehampton in the East. It includes Midhurst and parts of Billingshurst in the North. One of the hospital's challenges is caring for patients with cancer, because of the 212,000 residents in the catchment area, 25% are over 65 - which is when you are most likely to develop the disease.
Due to the high levels of demand and limited facilities, many local people cannot be treated at St. Richard's and have to travel to another cancer centre, such as in St. Mary's Hospital in Portsmouth.
The solution is to build a specialist Cancer Day Unit
Patients will come to a well-designed purpose built unit to receive all of their care
The treatment room will be spacious, comfortable and will have private areas for those who wish to use them
Clinics will run 5 days a week (rather than the current 3.5 days) so many more patients will be able to receive care locally to their homes. Based on the latest available data, we anticipate that we will be able to treat 66% more patients
Other improvements include:
- An Information Library for patients and their families who wish to research their condition
- A room for complementary therapies, such as massage
- A room for patients and their families who need some quiet space alone or with the doctor
- A seminar room, so health professionals from all disciplines can to discuss each patient's care fully
To turn the plans into reality, we need to raise £3 million
